Principal's Message

Dear Highland Families,

The power of YET! One small word—“yet”—can help children believe in their ability to grow. When your child says, “I can’t do this,” encourage them to add “yet”: “I can’t do this yet.” This simple reminder helps children understand that skills develop with time, practice, and support. Celebrate small steps, remind them that mistakes are part of learning, and encourage patience when progress feels slow. Your encouragement helps them see that a challenge today can become an accomplishment over time.

Our second graders had a wonderful time learning and exploring during their field trip to the Chicago Botanic Garden! They enjoyed discovering different plants, observing the beauty of nature, and asking thoughtful questions about the world around them. The trip brought classroom learning to life and gave students a chance to share discoveries and have fun together.

Last but not least, we are getting super excited for our BIG day tomorrow!

Highland Walk-a-Thon on Friday, October 23rd at 2:15 PM!

A HUGE thank you to all of our families who supported us in raising funds for our Highland School Angel Fund. The Angel Fund provides necessary items and services for our families who may need a helping hand.

Halloween & Alternate Fall Activities

We are excited to share that we will have Halloween celebrations on Friday, October 30, from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

If you would like to opt your child out of the Halloween celebration, please email your child’s teacher. We have planned a separate list of fun activities that they will be engaged in during that time.

What to expect at Highland School:

Costumes:
  •  Should not be worn to school in the morning. We will put them on in the early afternoon.
  • Please know that costumes must be school-appropriate; nothing violent or containing weapons.
  • Safety for all! A mask that does not allow the wearer to see is not safe.
Parties:
  • We welcome our families to celebrate Halloween with us! Our Hawks really enjoy it when their grown-ups can come, so we hope you can make it!
  • Parties will be in the classroom from 2:30-3:05 p.m. We have our staff members who are ready to support our children, so please do not come early.
Parade:
  • We will have a parade at about 3:10 p.m., with all of the visitors going to the playground to be the spectators. If it is too cold or rainy, we will parade indoors.
Photos:
  • If taking photographs, please be mindful of students and families who have requested that their child not be photographed. To respect everyone’s privacy, please take photos of your child only. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
